Rehabilitation Services

The Excelsior Springs Hospital's Rehabilitation Services team brings over 100 years combined experience to improving health through:

• Physical Therapy
• Occupational Therapy
• Speech Pathology

We, as professionals, welcome the responsibility of caring for those who face numerous challenges. Our aim is to restore function or to train our patients to accommodate their limitations by addressing his/her real life problems. The ultimate goal is to return them to as independent a lifestyle as possible.

We provide care in outpatient, home health, long term care, swingbed and acute care settings. We provide service to individuals of all ages from birth through elder years.

Physical Therapy

Musculoskeletal therapy includes: myofascial release; treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; muscle and other soft tissue injury rehabilitation; joint replacement rehabilitation; back injury prevention and rehabilitation; general stretching; posture education; amputation rehabilitation; prosthetic and orthotic management; and orthopedic sports rehabilitation.

Neuromuscular therapy includes: stroke rehabilitation; closed heal injury; congenital or acquired disorders of the central nervous system; and vestibular rehabilitation.

Integumentary therapy includes: wound care management.

Occupational Therapy

A registered therapist conducts a skilled evaluation of problems and needs and initiates the use of various modalities and practices to correct, adapt, or increase a person's abilities for everyday self-care and meaningful activities.

Wheelchair Modification to assist patients to maintain upright, midline posture while in a wheelchair without signs or symptoms of skin breakdown.

Wheelchair Mobility Skills to promote independence in daily functions and mobility when standing./walking is difficult.

Adaptive Equipment Training to compensate for physical limitations includes: long handled sponge, reacher, shoehorn; sock aid; elevated toilet seat; built up utensils; dressing stick; and weighted writing utensils.

Activities of Daily Living restore independence with everyday tasks like dressing, grooming, eating, batheing, toileting, housekeeping, food preparation.

Upper Extremity Therapy to increase performance of upper extremity functioning includes: strengthening; pain control; fracture; sprain; splinting; post surgical therapy; active range and passive range of motion.

Speech-Language Pathology

Stroke Rehabilitation helps stroke patients regain function of language, memory and speech.

Dysphagia Evaluation and Therapy (Swallowing) helps those who develop swallowing impairments as they age or due to a disease process such as stroke, Parkinson's Disease, or Alzheimer's.

Voice Therapy helps those who have changes to their voice quality following treatment for cancer or after laryngectomy, or from a stroke; helps those who stutter to increase their fluency; helps children and adolescents who have language disorders to understand and give directions, ask and answer questions, convey ideas, and improve the language skills that lead to better academic performance.
