Woods Memorial Christian Church donates Crayon Caddies

Women from Woods Memorial Christian Church donated handmade Crayon Caddies and coloring books for young children to enjoy while in the emergency room.  "We attended a women's retreat for our church and one of the topics was giving back to your community.  So we were determined to come up with an idea that would benefit our local hospital", stated member Sherri Belland.  "I came across this pattern in Ohio and we've been busy ever since."

"We appreciate the hard work of these women for helping relieve the anxiety of our youngest patients", said Sally Nance, Hospital CEO.  "Receiving the caddie and coloring books will give children a happy memory of their emergency room experience."

Bone Density Now Being Offered In-House:

Excelsior Springs Hospital has recently purchased state-of-the-art, highly accurate Bone Density technology that can test bone mass in less than 15 minutes. Testing is available 6 days a week. Bone Density testing is an important screening mechanism that tests for Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist.

Any bone can be affected, but of special concern are fractures of the hip and spine. A hip fracture almost always requires hospitalization and major surgery. It can impair a person's ability to walk unassisted and may cause prolonged or permanent disability or even death. Spinal or vertebral fractures also have serious consequences, including loss of height, severe back pain, and deformity.

Millions of Americans are at risk. While women are four times more likely than men to develop the disease, men also suffer from osteoporosis.

 Risk Factors

  • Certain people are more likely to develop osteoporosis than others. Factors that increase the likelihood of developing osteoporosis and broken bones are called "risk factors." Many of these risk factors include:
    • Being female
    • Older age
    • Family history of osteoporosis or broken bones
    • Being small and thin
    • Certain race/ethnicities such as Caucasian, Asian, or Hispanic/Latino although African Americans are also at risk
    • History of broken bones
    • Low sex hormones
      • Low estrogen levels in women, including menopause
      • Missing periods (amenorrhea)
      • Low levels of testosterone and estrogen in men
    • Diet
      • Low calcium intake
      • Low vitamin D intake
      • Excessive intake of protein, sodium and caffeine
    • Inactive lifestyle
    • Smoking
    • Alcohol abuse
    • Certain medications such as steroid medications, some anticonvulsants and others
    • Certain diseases and conditions such as anorexia nervosa, rheumatoid arthritis, gastrointestinal diseases and others

If you have any of these risk factors, please take the time to discuss them with your physician. Scans can only be done with a physician's order so talk to your physician today about getting screened!

Excelsior Springs Hospital participates in
National Wear Red Day

National Wear Red To Work Day was held Friday, Feb. 5 at ESH. This national observance is an important part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women’s Heart Health movement, a program that builds awareness, urges women to take action to reduce the risk of heart disease and raises money for lifesaving education and research.
Heart disease, the number one killer of women, does not discriminate; it affects women from all age groups, ethnicities, family histories and walks of life. Too many women die each year because they are unaware of this vital statistic: One in three women suffers in silence, and almost one woman dies every minute of this largely preventable disease.
Excelsior Springs Hospital is a proud supporter of the Go Red For Women campaign. We are happy to spread the message “Our Heart...Our Choice” to raise awareness of heart disease and empowering women and workplaces to reduce the risk of heart disease. To learn more about heart disease in women and choices you can make to live heart healthy, visit GoRedForWomen.org and sign up for the movement.
